Body lotion remains a necessity even during the summer—though it differs from its winter counterpart. What ingredients should it contain, and what should be left out?

Why is summer body lotion different from the kind used in winter? What factors should you look for when making a purchase?

With the arrival of winter, hands and feet tend to become rough, creating an urge to use oils and body lotions. However, the moment winter passes, we revert to our old habits; we lose the inclination to specifically apply lotion to our hands and feet, and it no longer even feels like a necessity.

However, skincare experts remind us that a change in season does not mean abandoning body lotion entirely; rather, it calls for switching to a different type of lotion. During the summer, the air holds higher levels of humidity, so the skin does not experience the same tightness or dryness felt in winter. Nevertheless, the skin can still suffer from a lack of hydration during this period. Simply applying oil or providing moisture is not the same as maintaining true skin hydration. Consequently, this is the time to choose a lotion that is lightweight, easily absorbed by the skin, and leaves no sticky residue.

Essential Ingredients to Look for in a Body Lotion

Water-based: For summer use, it is preferable to choose a lotion that is water-based rather than having a thick, cream-like consistency. These types of lotions are quite light in texture and are quickly absorbed by the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid plays a key role in retaining moisture. It is suitable for all skin types—whether oily, dry, or sensitive. With regular use, it keeps the skin soft and smooth. This is particularly beneficial during the summer months, as spending time in air-conditioned rooms can cause the skin to lose its hydration rapidly; thus, a body lotion enriched with hyaluronic acid can prove to be highly effective.

Glycerin: This ingredient also helps retain moisture. Consequently, you can apply a glycerin-enriched body lotion to your skin while it is still damp after a bath. It is beneficial during both winter and summer.

Aloe Vera:  Aloe Vera possesses anti-inflammatory properties. When applied to the skin, it provides a cooling and soothing sensation. Using an aloe vera-infused body lotion during this season will help keep your skin in good condition.

Cucumber:  Body lotions containing cucumber extract are also beneficial. Cucumbers have a high water content, which is excellent for the skin. This type of body lotion is particularly suitable for those with oily skin types.

Sunscreen:  Some body lotions also offer the added benefit of sunscreen protection. Summer body lotions typically feature distinct formulations. Therefore, when purchasing a body lotion, it is advisable to check whether it is formulated for use during the winter or for other times of the year.

Application Method

Applying body lotion while your skin is still slightly damp after a bath helps keep it moisturized for an extended period. If you spend long hours in an air-conditioned environment, it is also necessary to apply body lotion at night.
