Upon their market launch in September, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to bring significant advancements in hardware architecture. While there appear to be no major changes to the overall design compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, key internal components—such as a 2-nanometer processor, a C2 modem system supporting satellite 5G, and a variable aperture sensor—promise to enhance overall performance.
Reduction of the Dynamic Island and implementation of LTPO+ display technology.
The most noticeable change on the front of the device centers on the Dynamic Island display area. Apple is exploring ways to relocate the Face ID light source beneath the screen panel. Concealing this component reduces the footprint of the notch, thereby maximizing screen real estate without altering the device's frame dimensions.

In terms of display specifications, the iPhone 18 Pro retains a 6.3-inch screen size, while the Pro Max version measures 6.9 inches. The key difference lies in the new LTPO+ panel technology, which offers more precise refresh rate control, reduces power consumption, and extends battery life.
Computing power derived from the 2nm A20 Pro processor.
The next-generation processor will feature the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process, replacing the 3nm process used in the A19 Pro series. The transition to the 2nm node, combined with advanced semiconductor packaging techniques, results in higher transistor density.
This improvement not only boosts single-core and multi-core performance but also reduces heat generation. Notably, the new architecture is deeply optimized for AI tasks, ensuring faster response times and enhanced data security.
48-megapixel Fusion sensor with a mechanically adjustable aperture.
The rear optical system is housed in a raised ("plateau") module, where the 48-megapixel Fusion camera introduces a significant upgrade through its variable aperture system. This ability to directly adjust the aperture allows the system to flexibly control the amount of light entering the sensor based on ambient lighting conditions.
In addition to controlling depth of field (DoF) and natural optical depth, this feature optimizes sharpness across various focal lengths. However, the actual effectiveness of the optical bokeh remains somewhat constrained by the physical limitations of mobile sensors.
Satellite connectivity via the C2 modem and the next-generation N2 chip.
Apple is advancing its strategy of self-reliance in telecommunications chips by integrating the C2 modem. Following the C1 and C1X versions, the C2 modem offers higher transmission speeds, lower latency, and improved energy efficiency for mobile network connectivity.
Notably, the C2 modem is expected to support 5G connectivity directly via satellite. This feature enables communication and data-based internet access even in geographical areas outside the coverage of terrestrial base transceiver stations (BTS) or Wi-Fi networks. Simultaneously, the next-generation N2 chip will replace the N1 chip to handle Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread network protocols.
Matte finish design, Camera Control button, and battery capacity.
In terms of aesthetics, a "Dark Cherry" color option is likely to be added to the Pro lineup, while Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver options will remain; "Cosmic Orange" and "Deep Blue" may be discontinued. The Camera Control button will be redesigned to function entirely as a force-sensitive mechanism, moving away from a complex combination of touch and haptic feedback.
The rear panel—which houses the MagSafe charging ring and is covered with Ceramic Shield—will feature a uniform matte finish. Notably, the battery capacity of the iPhone 18 Pro Max has been increased by approximately 10%, resulting in a slightly thicker body to accommodate the larger battery cell and a new cooling system.
